Miss Rodeo South Dakota
The 2009 Miss Rodeo South Dakota and Junior Miss Rodeo South Dakota Pageants will be held June 29th-July 4th, in Belle Fourche, during the 90th Annual Black Hills Roundup.
Two Miss Rodeo South Dakota (MRSD) contestants will be competing for the title of Lady-In-Waiting, and will be officially crowned as Miss Rodeo South Dakota 2010 in early January. Contestants include McKenzie Haley of Winner and Kate Moen of Sisseton.
The Junior Miss Rodeo South Dakota (JRMRSD) winner will reign from July 2009 to July 2010. Four contestants are competing for this title. They include Jessica Johnson of Bison, Brielle Yackley of Watertown, Haley Smith of Rapid City, and Nicole Boomsma of Stickney.
The public is welcome to attend the Style Show at the Belle Fourche Area Community Center starting at 7:00pm on July 1st, the Horsemanship competition at the Black Hills Roundup Grounds starting at 8:00am, and the Coronation of the new queens during the intermission of the Black Hills Roundup Rodeo July 2nd. The newly crowned queens as well as the Reigning Miss Rodeo South Dakota Courtney Smith will be at the AmericInn of Belle Fourche for an autograph session at 2:00pm on July 3rd.
Miss Rodeo South Dakota Contestants
McKenzie Haley
McKenzie Haley is the 22-year-old daughter of Jim and Tracie Haley of Winner, South Dakota. She will be a senior at Black Hills State University majoring in Elementary Education with plans for a Masters in School Counseling. Some of her most proud moments were being named Jr. Miss Rodeo South Dakota 2004 and the South Dakota High School Rodeo Queen 2005-2006. At the National High School Rodeo Queen contest McKenzie was named 6th runner-up along with winning the modeling and speech categories.
Some of her other honors include receiving the Jade Mortenson Memorial Bible, being named the Winner High School Homecoming Queen, qualifying for the South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals three times, and most recently being named the 2009 Miss Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo.
When not studying, McKenzie enjoys exercising, riding horses, spending time with friends and family and volunteering at a local church youth group.
Kate Moen
The 23-year-old daughter of Clayton and Lori Moen, of Sisseton, Kate has been raised with rodeo, horses, cattle, family and God on a small ranch in eastern South Dakota. The hazel-eyed blond thinks it’s worked well for her so far and she plans to keep that lively mix working in her favor as she pursues the Miss Rodeo South Dakota 2010 title.
The 2007 graduate of South Dakota State University made her mark on the Brookings campus. An active participant in roping and barrel racing on the Jackrabbits Rodeo Team, she also served her alma matter as an Ag / Bio Ambassador, Collegiate 4-H President, Little International Staffer, multiple scholarship recipient, and maintained Dean’s List standings for four years.
Kate is a Sales Agronomist with the South Dakota Wheat Growers in south central South Dakota, fulfilling her career dreams to keep it Agriculture. Keeping it Rodeo is her life expectancy as well. Kate would like to thank Sharon and Kelsey Baker with EquiMedic USA, as well as her family for all their long-time support!
Junior Miss Rodeo South Dakota Contestants
Nicole Boomsma
Nicole Boomsma, “Nikki” as her friends and family call her, is the 19 year old daughter of Patti Boomsma of Stickney, SD and Kenny Boomsma of Hitchcock, SD. She is the sister to three brothers; Matthew (20), Justin(17), and Kardell Boomsma(14). Nicole hangs her hat in her hometown Stickney, South Dakota. She is the 2008 graduate of Stickney Public High School. To further her education, she decided to attend South Dakota State University in Brookings, South Dakota where she will be majoring in Pre-Physical Therapy with a minor in Equine Sciences. Her plan in the future is to become a Hippo therapist, which is therapy with horses.
Nicole is an active member of the Stickney Eagles 4-H club, Farmers Union, and Ethan Trial riders Club. In each club, she has played variety of community service and roles for the club. In high school, she participated in all of the extracurricular activities she possibly could. Nicole involved in basketball, volleyball, track, football cheerleading, all-school play, oral interp, and chorus. She has received many awards participating in these activites.
Nicole Boomsma is currently the 2008 Miss Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Queen. Her sponsor is the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Committee and Rodeo.
Jessica Johnson
Jessica Johnson is the 16-year-old daughter of Gus Johnson and Sheila Kari-Johnson. Jessica lives on a cattle ranch near Bison, SD. She attends Bison High School. Jessica has a passion for horses, rodeo, and playing the violin. She is a member of the: High School Golf Team, High School Drama Club, Oral Interp team, teaches violin lessons to elementary students, and plays the National Anthem for many activities. She also participates in FFA, 4-H horse shows and 4-H rodeos. Currently Jessica holds two titles: 2008 Miss Faith Stock Show and 2008 Jr. Miss Range Days. Jessica and her 10-year-old gelding named Whiskey River, have had the greatest privilege of paying tribute to our great nation. Jessica plays the National Anthem on her violin for many rodeos while gracefully sitting on Whiskey. “What a great honor to represent my country and honor Old Glory.” Jessica’s sponsor is the Johnson Law Office of Rapid City.
Haley Smith
Haley Smith is the 17-year-old daughter of Tom and Deanna Smith of Rapid City. Hayley’s academic activities include the Rapid City Rodeo Club, National High School Rodeo, volleyball, and cheerleading. Hayley is involved with the Pennington County Junior Leaders Association, and Community Outreach.
Her rodeo events include barrel racing, pole bending, and the rodeo queen contest. She also participates in horse judging, cattle cutting, reining, and horse shows. Hayley is the 2008 Newell Labor Day Rodeo Queen, 2008 Wall High School Rodeo Queen, and she was also the 2007 Junior Miss Range Days Rodeo Queen. Hayley’s proudest achievement was qualifying for the 2008 National High School Finals Rodeo in New Mexico participating in pole bending for the South Dakota team. After graduating from high school, she would like to attend college, pursue a career in criminal justice and continue to be involved in rodeo and horses. Hayley’s sponsor is West Quarter Horse Ranch, Catherine and Lowell (Odie) West of Pierre, South Dakota.
Brielle Yackley
Brielle Yackley is the 15-year-old daughter of Doug and Christine Sorensen and Mike and Kelli Yackley and she makes Watertown, South Dakota her home. Brielle will be a sophomore at Watertown High School where she participates in Advanced Placement classes, volleyball, concert strings orchestra, chorus, and debate.
Brielle is the reining Jr. Miss Rodeo Aberdeen Queen, which is held in Aberdeen in August every year and in conjunction with the Dakota Stampede Rodeo and Brown County Fair. Brielle won the horsemanship, speech, and appearance categories of the contest. Competing in queen contests since she was eight years old and with five queen titles behind her, Brielle enjoys the friendships and the rodeo community that grows with each rodeo and group of girls.
Growing up on a ranch with her brothers has given her a love of the land and for horses. She competes in both 4-H and high school rodeo and looks forward to adding cutting as an event this year in addition to barrel racing, pole bending, and goat tying. A moment that she will never forget was when she sang the National Anthem on the 4th of July while competing at the Wrangler National Jr. High School Rodeo in Gallup, NM. Brielle sends the best of luck to everyone and thanks the queen committee and her sponsors for this opportunity!
